Use of electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry to investigate complex dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its potential applications in phytoplankton research

چکیده
Organic nutrients are one of many factors considered to be important in the growth and proliferation of phytoplankton including many species that cause harmful algal blooms (HABs). Several studies have investigated the effects of known organic compounds on phytoplankton growth, however, the role of natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) in phytoplankton nutrition remains understudied at the compound level. This lack of research is due in part to analytical limitations for the characterization of DOM compounds. Electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry (MS) provides an unprecedented level of chemical information on thousands of organic compounds that comprise the bulk DOM pool. In this paper we provide a brief overview of some of the benefits and caveats of using ESI to investigate DOM in natural freshwater and marine systems and show an example of ESI-MS DOM characterization for a natural bloom of the raphidophyte Chattonella cf. verruculosa. 2008 Elsevier B.V. Continuous summer export of nitrogen-rich organic matter from the Greenland Ice Sheet inferred by ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry.
Runoff from glaciers and ice sheets has been acknowledged as a potential source of bioavailable dissolved organic matter (DOM) to downstream ecosystems. This source may become increasingly significant as glacial melt rates increase in response to future climate change. Recent work has identified significant concentrations of bioavailable carbon and iron in Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) runoff. The...
متن کاملCharacterization of low molecular weight dissolved natural organic matter along the treatment trait of a waterworks using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry.
Dissolved natural organic matter (DOM), particularly the low molecular weight DOM, can affect the performance of water treatment processes and serve as a main precursor of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during chlorination. In this study, electrospray ionization coupled to Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS) was used to characterize the low molecular wei...
متن کاملSelectivity of solid phase extraction of freshwater dissolved organic matter and its effect on ultrahigh resolution mass spectra.
Solid phase extraction (SPE) is often used for enrichment and clean-up prior to analysis of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled to ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). It is generally accepted that extraction by SPE is not quantitative with respect to carbon concentration. However, little information is...

The current research aimed to quantify melittin (MEL) in Iranian honey bee (Apis mellifera meda) venom. To this end, a liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-IT-MS/MS) approach was employed. Melittin is the main toxic peptide of honey bee venom with various biological and pharmacological activities. It was extracted with...

Production of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by marine phytoplankton supplies the majority of organic substrate consumed by heterotrophic bacterioplankton in the sea. This production and subsequent consumption converts a vast quantity of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus between organic and inorganic forms, directly impacting global cycles of these biologically important elements. Details regard...
